by Dustin Glick

You know, my parents were hippies, went to Woodstock, protested Vietnam, the whole thing. And they ask me, with all that's going on in the world today, why isn't your generation doing anything? What about the music? Why isn't there any anti-war music coming out from your bands? Well, to all you baby boomers out there, as well as people of my generation, kids, senior citizens, and whoever else cares: there is a lot of political music coming out right now. It's just under the radar and doesn't get played on corporate-owned radio or MTV for the most part. But still, it exists.

So check it out. Here are some bands, songs and music-based organizations that are fighting back against the Bush administration, or just speaking their minds about what they see going on in the world around them.
And to all of you out there who believe that artists should have no voice in politics, I have two things to say to you: You only say that when the artists in question happen to disagree with you, and, more importantly, a good song connects with the average human being far better than most politicians do. Unfortunately, politicians are not always the smartest people in our society. Think back to when you were in school and remember the people involved in student government.

NOFX ••• Franco Un-American
"I never looked around, never second-guessed
Then I read some Howard Zinn now I'm always depressed
And now I can't sleep from years of apathy
All because I read a little Noam Chomsky"

The Beastie Boys ••• In a World Gone Mad
"Mirrors, smokescreens and lies
It's not the politicians but their actions I despise
You and Saddam should kick it like back in the day
With the cocaine and Courvoisier
But you build more bombs as you get more bold
As your mid-life crisis war unfolds"

Spearhead ••• We Don't Stop
"They got a war for oil, a war for gold
A war for money and a war for souls
A war on terror, a war on drugs
A war on kindness, a war on hugs
A war on birds and a war on bees
They got a war on hippies tryin to save the trees
Wall street war, on high finance
A war on people who just love to dance
A war on on music, a war on speech
A war on teachers and the things they teach
A war for the last 500 years
War's just messin up the atmosphere
The war on pot is a war that's failed
A war that's fillin up the nation's jails
World war one, two, three and four
Chemical weapons, biological war
Bush war 1 and Bush war 2
They got a war for me, they got a war for you!"

Outkast ••• War
"Don't be patient, get up and stand up for your life
Don't you agree or understand we lost some rights at 1-1-9?...
When will we all, awake up out this dream
Come here and smell the Folgers, the soldiers are human beings
Man actin as if he was the supreme bein
Clockin the souls of men out like he was G-O-D and
W-A-R rah, there'll be no tomorrow but sorrow
and horror will follow the hollow hearts battle for dollars
Politicians, modern day magicians"

Zack De La Rocha w/ DJ Shadow ••• March of Death
"Here it comes, the sound of terror from above
He flex his Texas twisted tongue
The poor lined up to kill in desert slums
For oil that burn beneath the desert sun"

Pharoahe Monch ••• Agent Orange
"Pissed on the motherfucking White House lawn
I threw a rock, then I ran
Cause I couldn't stand anymore within the grip of the man
Y'all wanna ask me who's sane
These biological gasses are eating my brain
Its a political grab bag to rape mother earth
Thirty seconds after they bagged dad for what he's worth
Thousands will die now so millions can smile later...
It's not a Vietnam song
I know women from desert storm who came back deformed
Missin limbs and disease and they legs is numb
Chemicals twice as strong as agent orange"

Radio 4 ••• Calling all Enthusiasts
"Can you believe, arrested for protesting in the USA?
We're calling all enthusiasts
Who can resist"

Billy Bragg ••• The Price of Oil
"Now I ain’t no fan of Saddam Hussein
oh, please don’t get me wrong
If it’s freeing the Iraqi people you’re after
then why have we waited so long
Why didn’t we sort this out last time
Was he less evil than he is now
The stock market holds the answer
to why him, why here, why now
Saddam killed his own people
just like general Pinochet
and once upon a time both these evil men
were supported by the U.S.A.
and whisper it, even Bin Laden
once drank from America’s cup
Just like that election down in Florida
this shit doesn’t all add up
It’s all about the price of oil
‘Cause it’s all about the price of oil
Don’t give me no shit
about blood, sweat, tears and toil
It’s all about the price of oil "

Eminem ••• Square Dance
"All this terror America demands action,
Next thing you know you've got Uncle Sam's ass askin'
To join the army or what you'll do for thier Navy.
You just a baby,
Gettin' recruited at eighteen,
You're on a plane now,
Eatin their food and their baked beans.
I'm 28 ,
They gonna take you 'fore they take me"
