Some Girls :: All of My Friends are Going Death

Deathwish Inc., April 2004

by Josh Wolff

At first listen, the Some Girls’ 69 (15 actual songs with 54 blank tracks) track release, All of My Friends Are Going Death, is an absolute auditory onslaught. Akin to a succession of 15 separate plane crashes, each lasting roughly one mind scraping minute long, I feel like these guys must have been the last to be picked in the hardcore/punk world of dodge-ball.

Reminiscent of the mid 90s hardcore bands Endeavor and C.R., Some Girls offers a similar combination of outrageously erratic screaming vocals bordering the guttural with the heavy and often fast-paced guitars. The major difference between these bands is in the lyrical content. Though not entirely as thought provoking as other bands in their genre, Some Girls’ proffer up lines of the kind you might find scrapped unto the wall of a less than desirable place; A prison cell, for example. "Queens Without King" (track 10, in case you’re following along) reads, “don’t get me wrong / I know something is wrong / and now we’re gonna dance to a different song. / No lovers or blankets are keeping me warm…” And the title track, "All of My Friends Are Going Death" is spat out in what seems like one long word, “all my friends are going death / and breathing’s just a waste of breath and hearing just makes me deaf…” You just have to love the irony. Other song titles include "Gonne Set My Soul on Fire", "Sex and Glue", and "Some Girls Have All The Fuck". How original.
