Hyper :: Wired

Thrive Records, March 2004

by Jason Newman

Anyone who knows breakbeats is familiar with the name Hyper. So we’re told. But the producer responsible for the biggest-selling breakbeat compilation must be doing something right to have amassed such a devoted following. On Thrive, the UK DJ seems to be looking to expand his base into America by combining original songs and remixes. His masterful combination of synths, electro and random but appropriately matched beats makes for an album worthy of a road trip or a night out. No, the world doesn’t need another dance compilation but if you’re gonna get one, why not get it from one of the best? And he's sweated by the Chemical Brothers. You remember them, right?

Hatched on a misty mountain hop in 1979, not coincidentally the same year of birth as Slade's "Return to Base," Bette Midler's "Thighs and Whispers," and Art Garfunkel's "Fate for Breakfast," Jason Newman achieved notoriety at an early age as the first person to say "Hello" when answering the phone. From then on, he was destined for great things. They have yet to happen. He currently owes 3 months' back rent on the treehouse he lives in with a person named Raintrout and Billy (aka "Lil' Billy,") the house's owner. Jason's dream is to become a low-level cog in investment banking. With his dream fulfilled in 2000, he can now die in peace. Write him at jasonn@onefortytwo.com
